Shelter under a table if you can during an earthquake and get there fast, but forget about door-frames - they offer little protection, and you might get whacked by a swinging door.
The Ministry of Civil Defence, on its website, civildefence.govt.nz, offers advice on how to maximise your chances of surviving uninjured.
"Most earthquake-related injuries and deaths," it says, "result from collapsing walls and roofs, flying glass and falling objects."
As soon as an earthquake starts: "Drop to the floor, take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture and hold on to a leg of the furniture. If suitable furniture is not nearby, sit on the floor next to an interior wall and cover your head and neck with your arms.
"In modern homes, doorways are no stronger than any other part of the structure ... If you are in bed, stay there, hold on and protect your head with a pillow."
If outdoors, lie on a clear spot on the ground away from trees and poles.
