An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter Scale hit Gisborne early today.
GNS Science said the 4.04am quake was centred within 5km of Te Araroa, at a depth of 60km.
It was likely to have been felt throughout the Gisborne region.
Wellington was shaken by a similar sized earthquake last night.
The magnitude 4.8 trembler at 6.02pm was centred 20km northwest of the capital.
