If big-budget, sword-and-sandal special-effect sagas are your thing, look no further.

This remake of the fondly remembered 1981 fantasy stars Sam Worthington - obviously the go-to guy for heroic lead roles of late - as Perseus, a demi-god fisherman who heads a bunch of expendable sidekicks on a dangerous trip to the underworld and points in between to save the imperilled city of Argos from the wrath of the monstrous Kraken.

Despite the tale's dubious detours from classical mythology, there's enough action and star roles (Liam Neeson as Zeus, Ralph Fiennes as Hades, charismatic Mads Mikkelsen as our hero's sullen mentor) to make it a suitable diversion for a rainy day.
