A woman fought off an attacker who punched and stabbed her in the neck at her home before she managed to flee with her young daughter.
The woman was having surgery at Dunedin Hospital for serious wounds to her neck and face after the attack this morning at her Dunedin home.
Detective Inspector Kevin Hooper said the man, who was not known to the woman, entered her home about 8.30am when she answered a knock on her front door.
She suffered stab wounds to her neck and face and bruising in the violent attack that followed .
The victim's 3-year-old daughter was also in the house but was unharmed in the incident.
