A good Samaritan was punched in the face and had his car stolen after assisting a man to escape a gang fight in Dunedin, police say.
Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said the man was driving through Corstorphine at 8pm on Wednesday, when he saw a patched gang member being hit by three other patched gang members.
The motorist helped the alleged victim into the passenger side of his car, and then fled the scene.
Later the victim then punched and kicked his rescuer, who escaped but watched the man drive off with his 2001 silver Subaru Legacy.
The victim-turned-offender was described as a male Maori aged in his mid-20s with tattoos on his face and neck.
