The Dunedin City Council is turning off its 14,000 street lights for 30 minutes a day, in an effort to improve on the 3.5 per cent electricity saving the city has been making.
Council roading manager Peter Morton said the lights would switch off 15 minutes earlier in the morning and come on 15 minutes later in the evening.
"We can do this because, in conjunction with police, we do not think it raises any security issues."
