Dunedin's Bryce Hosie is one of seven young people who have defied the odds to achieve excellence, with his efforts earning recognition from the Child, Youth and Family Services.
The William Wallace Awards are given out annually to help young people achieve their potential through leadership, vocational or tertiary training.
Minister for Child, Youth and Family Services Ruth Dyson said the winners were inspiring individuals who had overcome huge barriers.
"Among this year's winners are young people who have been in care, and with the love and support of their caregivers and social workers, are now pursuing their dreams of further education and travel."
The award ceremony is being held during Foster Care Awareness week.
This year's winners will study at university, attend Outward Bound, and in one case, go to Gallipoli as part of Army Cadet training.
Others being honoured include Craig Scorringe from Invercargill, Kayla Konig from Tauranga, Anne-Marie Mabus from Nelson, Jack Baker from Palmerston North and Turoa Salmon from Opotiki.
