KEY POINTS:
Police are hunting for a barefoot prisoner who escaped as he was been taken to a South Dunedin property to help with an investigation.
Steven Allen Shaw, 43, escaped about 11.40am yesterday.
Shaw had appeared yesterday in the Dunedin District Court charged with burglary and possession of an offensive weapon and was remanded in custody to August 5.
Dunedin area commander Inspector Dave Campbell said after his court appearance Shaw was taken by police to an address in Kirkaldy Street South Dunedin to help with the investigation.
"He was not handcuffed at the time and while at that location he managed to escape from the custody of the officers."
Shaw is described as Caucasian, 180cm tall and of medium build.
He has a shaven head, extensive tattooing on his arms and hands and was wearing black jeans, black t-shirt and was barefoot.
Shaw is not considered dangerous to the public but should not be approached and any sightings should be reported to the police.
