The army's bomb disposal unit is heading to Dunedin this afternoon after two fisherman caught what is believed to be a historic bomb yesterday.
The men pulled the object from the water yesterday afternoon when it got stuck in their net, and took it to Carey's Bay, a suburb of Port Chalmers, near Dunedin, this morning before alerting police about 10am.
"It looks like a bomb that you see in the movies, dropping out of an airplane. It's about half a metre long with fins on it at one end," Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross told NZPA.
He said part of the fishermen's wharf in Carey's Bay had been cordoned off until the object was rendered safe.
The army bomb disposal unit was heading down from Christchurch and was expected to arrive about 5pm.
