KEY POINTS:
A bank robber walked into a bank on Dunedin's main street at lunchtime and handed over a note requesting cash, police say.
The man then fled, running down streets lined with lunching people.
Detective Sergeant Malcolm Ingles said the man walked unmasked into the National Bank on George Street, approached an available teller and told her to hand over the money.
He was given a small amount of cash, then left the scene, jogging past several cafes and the library.
Mr Ingles described the man as a medium to heavy-set Maori or Polynesian, about 176cm tall. He had a goatee and was wearing a black polar fleece top, a dark blue beanie, dark grey cotton tracksuit pants and white shoes.
The detective asked for anyone who saw the man running through town to call the Dunedin police.
