Forensic examinations are continuing urgently on two human placentas found in a creek bed near Raglan in the Waikato last week.
The placentas were found in the Te Toto Gorge near Whaanga Road, south west of Raglan.
Because of the fears that are held for the well-being of the babies and their mother the forensic tests are being conducted quickly.
"The main thing we want to do is quickly establish the identity of the people involved to ensure they are safe," Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Whitehead said.
The results of the forensic examinations, by Environmental Science and Research (ESR) and a forensic pathologist, will confirm whether the placentas are from one common mother.
Police hope to obtain a DNA profile for the mother and to confirm the babies are all right.
Police have also canvassed maternity service providers in the area.
There has been no response from the public and police are stressing that if the disposal of the placentas was an innocent act then the family's privacy would be respected.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Mr Whitehead at the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200 or CrimeStoppers crimeline, 0800 555111.
