Dry and windy weather has increased the fire risk in the Auckland region, causing concern for firefighters ahead of Guy Fawkes night.
Auckland Council principal rural fire officer Bryan Cartelle has issued a warning after crews were called to a number of controlled burns getting out of control.
Mr Cartelle said people should consider safety rules around burn-offs, including burning during daylight hours, supervising at all times, and not burning green vegetation, rubber, plastic, toxic materials, treated timber or building waste.
In rural areas, a fire truck must be able to access property at all times in case of emergency.
Mr Cartelle encouraged people to also review the safety zones around their homes.
