An attempt by two teens to divert police so they could drive home drunk from a Tauranga pub early this morning backfired when they were pulled over and charged.
Senior Sergeant Wayne Mills of Tauranga police said the pair were at a central city pub when one called police to report an alleged gang fight taking place in a local suburb.
"Once police had left the area it was their intention to drive home," Mr Mills said.
The pair, both aged 18, got only a few blocks on their way to Mount Maunganui before being pulled over about 3.40am.
The driver failed a breath-alcohol test and his mate was also arrested after police discovered he was the one who allegedly made the call about the supposed gang fight.
Both are due to face charges in Tauranga District Court.
