A drunk teenager on his restricted licence has stunned police after he was caught speeding and carrying six passengers on Auckland's northern motorway on Saturday night.
Police say that at about 10.40pm on Saturday August 28, a Nissan Silvia was clocked at 177km/ph travelling southbound from Tristram Avenue. The car
made it over the Harbour Bridge and was eventually stopped at the Shelly Beach off ramp.
The 18-year-old male driver was breath-tested and gave a reading of 462 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath - more than three times over the legal limit for those on a restricted licence of 150mg/l.
He elected to have a blood test to determine if there is to be a future court appearance, police said.
The driver was also found to be carrying six passengers in the two-door car.
Police say the driver has previous speed and alcohol convictions.
"This is an example of a young male driver who has no respect for the law," said Waitemata police spokesman Kevin Loughlin in a press release. "This individual has put the lives of his passengers and other road users at great risk as a result of his attitude to dangerous driving, speeding, excessive drink driving, restricted licences, and passenger overloading."
Charges will be laid once the results of the alcohol blood test have been processed, says Mr Loughlin.
