A Napier teen who fled the scene after crashing his mother's car has been charged with drink-driving.
The 16-year-old abandoned the vehicle after he lost control and crashed into a power pole on Riverbend Road about 5am, police said.
Power to the area was cut and the road has been closed while maintenance crews work on repairing the damage.
Napier Area Commander Inspector Kevin Kalff said this morning a youth had admitted to driving the car and police were processing him for excess breath alcohol.
