A man who went for a "drunken dunk" in Mission Bay last night is extremely lucky another man searching for his Go Pro was able to assist in his rescue, police say.
The intoxicated man went into waters at Mission Bay in Auckland fully clothed about 8.30 last night.
Glendowie resident Craig Koning was in his tender looking for his Go Pro Hero 3 when he saw the intoxicated man struggling to stay above water.
Police helicopter Eagle had spotted the man but police were unsure how they would reach him.
Constables Ben Pye and Darren Olliver crammed into the vessel alongside Mr Koning and, with the aid of the helicopter and their own torch lights, returned the man to shore. He was taken to hospital for observation.
