A driver went through an alcohol breath testing stop on the Auckland Harbour Bridge, drove through the cones and pulled up before hiding in a garden.
Police dogs were used to find the man who allegedly told police he had already been disqualified from driving.
The man was tested and found to have excess breath alcohol and his car has been impounded following the weekend incident.
Auckland City road policing manager Heather Wells said 84 drivers blew over the limit during checks on the weekend.
She said the highest reading was three times over the 400 microgram limit at 1234.
Because of the Labour Party conference and Guy Fawkes, less police were on hand to help with the checkpoints.
Ms Wells said in another incident, a couple in a taxi that was being checked decided they did not want to wait and left the taxi, walking through the checkpoint, and crossing the motorway barrier.
Police stopped the couple and gave them a lift to their home nearby but before reaching their home, a female officer was allegedly assaulted and the couple ran off.
The couple were found a short distance away and are facing charges.
Land Transport taxi enforcement staff also found 163 taxis were found to be non-compliant and 63 were ordered off the road over the weekend.
