A Wellington detective who was sentenced for dangerous driving whilst drunk says it was one of the lowest points in his life.
John Gualter was caught last November just after he and his wife had split up. The former Police College teacher has been fined more than $2000, and disqualified from driving for nine months.
Mr Gualter says he did a terrible thing, and the sentencing was fair. He says he has beaten himself up about the incident since it happened and it has not been an easy road.
Mr Gualter is now waiting for police employment procedures to take their course, before making any decisions over his career. Police are not commenting on whether the Wellington detective will keep his job.
