Authorities are warning of the dangers of mixing drugs and alcohol with guns after a man appears to have unintentionally shot himself.
Nigel Lurman, 41, died when he was shot in the side of the head with a .22 calibre rifle on Tuesday night. Police said he had been using recreational drugs with three friends in a cabin on the Whangamata Estuary.
The death is not being treated as suspicious.
