ROTORUA - The baby used by relatives to hide drugs during a police raid is understood to still be with its family, despite police concern for its welfare.
Police found 30 cannabis "tinnies" hidden in the 3-month-old baby's shawl during a drugs bust on a Rotorua house about noon on Wednesday.
They reported the incident to social welfare agencies that day for follow-up, describing it as "despicable."
Children's Commissioner Roger McClay was also appalled by the incident and said his heart would grieve little if the child was taken from its mother.
But the Department of Child, Youth and Family will not investigate the case until "the next week or so" because no concerns about the baby's physical safety had been reported and there was no suggestion that it was neglected.
Five other children were in the house at the time.
Police said they initially thought the baby's parents were in the house but were now not sure who the parents were. Two women and two men face cannabis charges.
