An attempt to smuggle cannabis to a prisoner at Christchurch Men's Prison last week was foiled by eagle-eyed prison staff, the Corrections Department says.
A visitor was spotted handing a package to the prisoner, before staff intervened, prison manager John Roper said.
The prisoner refused to cooperate with staff during a strip search, but when arrangements were made for the prisoner to be placed in a special cell where he couldn't dispose of the drugs, he handed the package over.
It was found to contain 30g of cannabis.
The prison was working with police and charges were pending, Mr Roper said.
