As the cannabis-picking season steps up in Hawkes Bay, police are warning people to "get out of there" if they come across plots as they were likely to protected by potentially lethal booby-traps.
Investigating possible cannabis plots was dangerous because growers were desperate to protect them, Detective Chris Cahill of the Napier CIB said.
That desperation extended to razor blades strung around plants and shotgun-activated tripwires.
Police warned that many plots were laid out in forestry areas and places where trampers or recreation walkers could come across them.
Their advice is to move out of the area and report it to police. Outdoor-plot numbers have reduced over the past couple of years with more growers setting up indoor-growing operations.
