A person has drowned in the Tararua District this afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the incident at Akitio, north of Masterton and east of Palmerston North, about 5pm.
A police spokesman said the area was remote and communication difficult.
The person was thought to be a diver but this could not be confirmed.
