Surf lifeguards have averted a potential tragedy at Tolaga Bay north of Gisborne.
They caught hold of the hand of a young boy who got into trouble in the surf yesterday, just as he was going under.
The boy was the youngest of three children who got into difficulties in a rip in the mouth of a river.
Two lifeguards went to their aid and grabbed the boy just as he was about to disappear.
The boy and one of the two girls in trouble were taken to shore in the rescue boat, and one of the lifesavers dived into the water and towed the other girl to safety in a rescue tube.
All three of the victims were exhausted but otherwise fine.
