The boy who drowned at Waikanae Beach on the Kapiti Coast on New Year's Eve was Julian Jenkins, 5, of Levin, who was swimming with his 8-year-old brother.
Detective Sergeant Marc Hercock of Kapiti police said the two were in the water just in front of the surf when a wave knocked Julian down.
His brother was unable to find him and ran for help.
