Poor weather is being credited for a reduction in the number of drink-drivers apprehended during a police blitz on Auckland's North Shore at the weekend.
Police stopped 9594 vehicles during Operation Lockdown 6, with 41 drivers testing positive for excess breath alcohol. Four were teenagers, said Senior Sergeant Shanan Gray.
The number was significantly lower than previous operations, and the weather was a likely contributing factor, he said.
"It seems more people opted to stay indoors over the weekend than venture out in their vehicles."
However, Mr Gray said it could also indicate a growing awareness of the dangers of drink-driving.
