Drivers trapped in Desert Road snow and ice

Snow and icy conditions closed the Desert Road, in the central North Island, this morning.

At one point, five trucks, two cars and a trailer were stuck near the summit.

Contractors released them this morning.

An alternative route via National Park was open. The Desert Road was not expected to re-open before 10am.
