A freight train driver has escaped with minor injuries after an engine derailment near Ashburton this morning.
Emergency services were called to the level crossing on Delamaine Street, Hinds, about 7.54am.
Police southern communications spokesperson Greg van Tuinen said the engine was not pulling any wagons and no other vehicles were involved.
The driver was treated at the scene by ambulance staff for minor injuries, Mr van Tuinen said.
He said the scene has now been cleared.
