"There were no injuries, except for the pooch in the back [which] has a bloody nose," Mr Forster said.
The dog, a 10-year-old labrador cross called Ging, was reluctant to leave his owner's smashed car and was carried out by Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic Adam Stevenson.
Driver Patricia, from Mataikona, north of Castlepoint, said the crash happened "too quick" and her concerns heightened when she noticed smoke coming from her car.
"It just happened too quick. I was scared afterwards because the car was smoking and then I couldn't get out my door so I had to climb out the other side and I was worried about the dog," she said.
Patricia said other than a sore elbow she was fine.
