A witness has slammed the driver of a car that fled police in Dunedintoday as an "inconsiderate idiot" and says it is lucky he did not take out an innocent bystander.
Emergency services were called after a car flipped down a 3m bank at the intersection of Main South Rd and Quarry Rd, Green Island, about 8.15am.
Dunedin Area Response Manager Senior Sergeant Rebecca Hill said police tried to stop a vehicle about 8.15am in relation to a "family harm incident" earlier in the morning.
"The vehicle fled police on Quarry Rd and crashed into a power pole after a very short time.
