A witness has slammed the driver of a car that fled police in Dunedintoday as an "inconsiderate idiot" and says it is lucky he did not take out an innocent bystander.
Emergency services were called after a car flipped down a 3m bank at the intersection of Main South Rdand Quarry Rd, Green Island, about 8.15am.
Dunedin Area Response Manager Senior Sergeant Rebecca Hill said police tried to stop a vehicle about 8.15am in relation to a "family harm incident" earlier in the morning.
"The vehicle fled police on Quarry Rd and crashed into a power pole after a very short time.

"No other vehicles were involved and no one else was injured."
Hill said the driver was not thought to be seriously injured.
A witness said on the Otago Daily Times Facebook page she saw the driver being chased at high-speed through Green Island while taking her children to school.
She slammed the driver as a "careless inconsiderate idiot" for initiating a police chase in a suburban area on a weekday morning.
"Just glad he didn't take out anyone innocent," she said.
Another witness working on a forklift in the yard below where the black Subaru ended up, said he heard sirens and saw the car hitting a power pole at speed.
The pole snapped in half and the car took out a mesh wire fence before falling on its roof down a 3m bank.

"There was sh*t flying everywhere."
The male driver, the only person in the car,was dragged out of the smoking wreck by a police officer and a fellow worker of the witness.
A St John spokesman said the driver was taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance with moderate injuries.
