KEY POINTS:
Police say a driver who crashed into the backyard of a house in Massey, destroying a fence after the high speed crash, was lucky to walk away from the accident.
Northern Communications Sergeant Chris Money said the car, with three people inside, was travelling to the city on the North Western motorway when the crash happened.
The car was travelling at high speed and had veered left, leaving the motorway and landing in the backyard of a house in Huruhuru Road, Massey.
Two of the passengers were flung from the car on impact and were taken to Auckland Hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries, he said.
The driver was uninjured and was suspected to have been drinking alcohol and was taken to the Henderson Police Station for processing, he said.
The Motorways Serious Crash Unit is investigating the crash.
