The driver of a four-wheel-drive vehicle walked away uninjured today after plunging 50m off the Pohuehue Viaduct on State Highway 1, north of Auckland, into the valley below.
The vehicle crashed through the viaduct barrier about 5.30pm, Inspector Kerry Watson of the police northern communications centre said.
One lane of the road was closed for two hours while a structural engineer assessed the safety of the viaduct, backing up traffic in either direction.
