A North Shore driver was so drunk when he was stopped at a drink-driving checkpoint he had to be helped from his car, say police.
He was more than 10,000 drivers stopped during a weekend blitz on the North shore which, police said, found 61 drivers over the limit.
One of the drivers was too drunk to get out his car without help and walk to the booze bus. Others were twice or three times the legal limit, said Senior Sergeant Brett Batty.
He said the 61 positive tests was more than during a similar blitz in August.
Two of the driver were teenagers.
Mr Batty said it was disappointing that so many drivers were so far above the legal limit.
Police impounded 12 cars and suspended 31 drivers' licenses.
Collections officers and bailiffs from the Ministry of Justice checked occupants for unpaid fines and seven drivers had their vehicles impounded because they had not paid.
Mr Batty said it was a timely reminder police had a zero tolerance for drink-driving.
