A Christchurch driver who failed to stop at a stop sign and crashed into a truck, killing his passenger, has been ordered to pay $16,500 to the victim's family.
Grant Michael Anicich, 26, pleaded guilty in Rangiora District Court to careless use of a vehicle causing the death of husband and father of two Tasesa Mataa'le, 35.
Judge Robert Kerr said Anicich carelessness was at the low end of the scale, but had had terrible and tragic consequences.
He ordered Anicich to pay Mr Mataa'le's family $16,500, and disqualified him from driving for six months. The accident happened near Rangiora on June 14.
