Drivers can increase their chances of having a safe holiday by following a few tips for the festive season, says the Land Transport Safety Authority.
Over the past five years, there has been an average of 20 deaths and 385 injuries in road accidents over the Christmas-New Year.
LTSA spokesman Andy Knackstedt said the dangers of crowded roads with resulting stress, drink-drivers and other seasonal hazards could be minimised "by planning ahead ... and allowing plenty of time for long trips".
Tips included:
* Having the vehicle's tyre tread and pressure, lights, brakes and cooling systems checked before travelling.
* Stowing everything properly - even small items can become missiles in an accident.
* When towing, loading heavy objects evenly over all the axles; ensuring couplings are compatible; checking the safety chain, trailer lights, tyres and brakes. Keep to 80km/h on the open road.
* Getting plenty of sleep before the journey. Take your time and have rest breaks every couple of hours; take a nap if necessary (under 40 minutes); if possible, share driving.
The official Christmas-New Year holiday period begins at 4pm on Christmas Eve and finishes at 6am, January 5.
