KEY POINTS:
A Motueka man apparently survived a road crash this morning, but collapsed and died after walking about 20m from his wrecked car.
Police said the 58-year-old's body was found by roading contractors about 7.45am today.
His car was located upside down in a paddock on Central Road, Upper Moutere, about 18km south of Motueka.
Acting Senior Sergeant Ian Langridge, of Motueka police, said the deceased was believed to have been the sole occupant of the car.
"It appears he has got out of the vehicle after the crash (and) walked approximately 20m before collapsing and dying," he said.
An initial scene examination indicated the crash happened last night or early this morning.
Mr Langridge said police had advised the coroner and were contacting the man's next of kin.
The police serious crash unit was investigating.
