An 18-year-old has surrendered to police after a hit and run left another teenager critically hurt at Bucklands Beach, east Auckland, late last night.
Police said the 18-year-old woman victim was in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
Northern police communications Inspector Matt Rogers said the male driver of the hit and run vehicle fled after the incident about 11.20pm.
"Lots of members of the public were trying to help and do first aid for the victim.
"Through subsequent inquiries they managed to track down the car and then he has made his way into the police station."
He said the driver was likely to face serious charges, including failing to stop and ascertain injuries.
The driver would also be charged with driving while disqualified.
"It could be a number of traffic related offences."
Mr Rogers said the inquiry would also try to establish of the driver had been drinking or using drugs.
