A Hamilton man run over by his own bus in December has left hospital.
Ross McSheffrey was trapped under his empty bus outside Waikato Hospital's carpark building on December 29. People rushed to help Mr McSheffrey, who had fallen under the bus after getting off while it was still in gear.
A nearby contractor used his digger to lift the bus off the 52-year-old.
Seven weeks on and Mr McSheffrey has left hospital after overcoming his life-threatening injuries.
"When I came to I was just trying, without sounding dramatic, just trying to survive. I remember I just wanted to sleep and lay there. But slowly I got stronger and as you get stronger you just want to keep on the road to recovery," he told the Waikato Times.
His recovery was inspired by photos of his family, including six grandchildren, which were stuck to the wall.
"I used to look at that and say, 'you can do it, there's still too much life to be enjoyed'."
Mr McSheffrey said he would be forever grateful to the medical staff and to his wife, Trish, for helping him recover.
