Driver killed in Lewis Pass crash named

Police today named a man killed when his car crashed into a power pole in North Canterbury on Monday night.

He was Alex Paul Benge, 38, of Christchurch.

The crash, which happened at about 8pm on the Lewis Pass Highway about 35km from Hanmer Springs, brought down power lines.

Senior Constable Chris Hughey said they were investigating the crash and a report would be referred to the coroner for an inquest.

Road conditions at the time were icy, with temperatures around minus 9C, Mr Hughey said.

"You've got to be careful driving in these conditions," he said. "The roads aren't too flash."
