The elderly driver who died in a car crash near Darfield, Canterbury, yesterday has been named by police.
Gordon Clifford Chapman, 76, of Takaka, was driving north-west on Coaltrack Rd when he collided with a four-wheel drive travelling south-west on Bealey Rd, just after 11.45am.
His wife, Carol who was a passenger in the vehicle, remains in a serious condition in the intensive care unit at Christchurch Hospital.
The couple were on holiday.
The driver of the other vehicle was released from hospital yesterday after being treated for minor injuries.
