Driver in high-speed crash flown to hospital

A man was flown to hospital after he was ejected from the vehicle he was driving in a "high speed roll-over" in the Waikato.

The man in his 50s crashed in Rangiriri shortly before 3pm yesterday. He had been ejected from his vehicle and was in the care of St John and the Fire Service when Westpac Rescue Helicopter arrived.

He suffered multiple injuries and was flown to Waikato Hospital in critical condition.

Auckland Rescue Helicopter also assisted in a high speed head-on crash on State Highway One Karapiro yesterday.

A male teenager, who was a passenger in one of the cars, had suffered a head injury. He was flown to Waikato Hospital in critical condition.

Two others were taken to Waikato Hospital by St John. One person had serious injuries and one person had moderate injuries.

Meanwhile, an elderly man had to be winched from an island in the Hauraki Gulf by helicopter crew yesterday.

He had been walking on a track with friends when he slipped and injured his leg.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter landed at the top of a steep hill, about 400 metres from the man.

He was winched from the area using an air rescue vest and flown to Auckland City Hospital in moderate condition.
