One of two men charged over the death of Howick delivery driver Aaron Chan "strongly" denies the charge against him but has been remanded in custody until next month.
Mr Chan, 21, was killed on Monday when he was hit by a car in what police believe was a speed-related crash involving vehicles driven by Warren Peter Hughes, 28, and Dion Wells, 35.
The accident horrified witnesses and emergency services because Mr Chan lost one arm and was left slung over a car bonnet.
Both men face a charge of reckless driving causing death, although police are not ruling out further charges.
Wells, 35, appeared to have one arm in a sling beneath his jumper when he appeared in the Waitakere District Court yesterday. He was remanded on bail with a curfew and instructions not to drive or associate with Hughes.
Hughes, however, was remanded in custody when he appeared before Judge Robert Kerr later in the day.
Hughes was calm when he appeared in the dock, although he smiled to acknowledge friends.
He had several Band-Aids covering cuts to both hands.
Through his lawyer, David Young, Hughes "strongly" denied the charge and requested bail. He also asked for name suppression. "The defendant was actually proactive in preventing an assault taking place between the passenger in his vehicle and the driver in the other car," Mr Young said.
"This defendant is not responsible for the chaos that followed."
Both men are to reappear on December 17.
