Driver: 'I'm better at driving drunk than my friends'

A man driving with a breath-alcohol level almost twice the legal limit told police he was better at driving drunk than his friends.

Joshua Patrick Homan, 20, has appeared in the Rotorua District Court and pleaded guilty to one charge of dangerous driving and one of drink-driving.

According to the police summary of facts, Homan was spotted by a police patrol while driving in Rotorua about 1.10am on June 7.

After police switched on their lights and sirens Homan drove at speed along the wrong side of the road, narrowly missing the curb and mounting the footpath.

As he approached a roundabout he slowed down. He pulled over and admitted that he had been drinking.

He was breath-tested and found to have a breath-alcohol level of 760mcg of alcohol per litre of breath. The legal limit is 400mcg.

Homan told police he was better at driving drunk than his friends and they were just having fun.

Judge Geoffrey Ellis sentenced him to 70 hours of community work and disqualified him from driving for six months.
