A 25-year-old man died after he was flung from his car when it left the road and rolled last night in Palmerston North.
Police spokesman Mark Glentworth said the man was the sole occupant of the car, which was travelling on Stoney Creek Rd.
The driver died at the scene, he said.
The Police Serious Crash Unit attended and the road was closed while a full scene examination was carried out.
It appeared that speed was "a major contributing factor" and the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, Mr Glentworth said.
The name of the dead man could not be released as police had yet to contact his family.
