Driver dies after hitting pole in police chase

A man died after his vehicle crashed into a power pole during a police chase in Auckland today, police said.

The crash happened about 11.29am in Onehunga, at the intersection of Captain Springs Rd and Neilson St.x

The white four-wheel-drive Mitsubishi Pajero rolled on to its side before it hit the pole, police said in a statement.

The man had been pursued by police units, including the Eagle helicopter, since 11.12am, when officers stopped him in Motions Rd, Westmere.

They questioned him about the ownership of the vehicle he was driving.
