A driver is dead after a fatal crash at Hampton Downs during a vintage car event today.
At about 1:20pm, firefighters from Mercer and Te Kauwhata were sent to the racetrack 68km south of Auckland after a person was trapped in a car following a serious crash.
Hampton Downs was hosting the Roycroft Vintage Festival, an event for vintage sports cars.
Entry was mostly limited to Vintage Car Club members with pre-1960 vehicles, a Historic Racing Licence, and drivers were required to have helmets and adequate race clothing.
Police and other emergency services were still at the crash scene at 3:30pm and the rest of today's racing has been cancelled as the area is cordoned off for a Serious Crash Unit investigation.
