It was a "thump", and wet patch of road that alerted a Hastings couple to a fatal crash which occurred metres from them yesterday.
Emergency services were called to Swamp Rd near Fernhill, about 11.30am, where a man was killed after the car he was driving crashed into a deep roadside drain.
A police spokesman said the man had been the car's only occupant, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash - which left the car upside down and mostly submerged.
A St John Ambulance spokesperson said they had been called for assistance, but that the man had died when they arrived.
As of last night police were unable to confirm any details about the man as his next of kin were still being notified. The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
It occurred on a straight stretch of Swamp Rd, with the nearby area containing one of the few hubs of housing along the isolated thoroughfare from Puketapu to Omahu.
