A man was last night in a critical condition after the car he was in smashed into a traffic sign in central Auckland.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Stanley St and The Strand just after 9.30pm, where they found the the entire front of the car crumpled.
The only occupant was cut out of the vehicle and taken to Auckland City Hospital.
Sergeant Andy Francis, of the Auckland motorways police, said it appeared the vehicle was travelling down Stanley St and collided with a sign pole at the intersection traffic lights.
