Driver charged over pole crash

LUCKY ESCAPE: A woman who was driving this car was fortunate to escape without any injuries.

A 56-year-old Masterton woman who crashed into a power pole on Te Ore Ore Rd on Sunday afternoon was drink-driving, police say.

The woman, who was allegedly driving on an expired learner's licence, was arrested at the scene and taken to the police station to be breath tested.

She was charged with driving with excess breath alcohol for a third or subsequent time and careless driving.

The woman will appear in Masterton District Court on September 29.

Sergeant Simon Irving said the woman was "very active in the community".

She was the sole occupant of the Mazda car and was not injured. The power pole was not so lucky and Powerco said yesterday it would need to be replaced.

A 25-year-old man who allegedly punched a police officer on Friday night will appear in court charged with assault.

Police say the man had been arrested for disorderly behaviour and while being transported punched the officer in the eye.

The officer did not require medical treatment.
