A driver was arrested yesterday after allegedly speeding through Tauranga at speeds in excess of 200km/h.
Acting Senior Sergeant Lester Polglase said it was a miracle no one was hurt.
"It would only take another motorist who was being passed to decide to change lanes and it would have ended in disaster."
Mr Polglase said a police officer was unable to keep up with the speeding car as it travelled at more than 200km/h in an 80km/h speed zone.
"He was passing cars like they were standing still."
The man, in his 20s, was eventually pulled over at the Marsh St lights where he was forced to stop.
There were three passengers in the car.
Mr Polglase said the man admitted to driving in excess of 200km/h and "was showing off to his mates".
The man's driving licence was immediately suspended for 28 days and he is scheduled to appear in Tauranga District Court tomorrow on a charge of dangerous driving.
